Note 'K' = Black "Pigment Black" is required for these new types. Dye based won't work...

37, 38, 40, 41, 50, 51, 52

Required Materials

  1. Newspaper, paper towel, or other disposable surface that can get ink on it.
  2. Needle and Syringe per colour. (Supplied)
  3. One pair of latex gloves. (Optional) Ink Stains... Take care when handling.
  4. A small drill with a size 2mm diameter bit. Hole must be slightly bigger than the 1.5mm diameter of our needle to allow air to escape whilst injecting.
  5. Quality piece of sticky tape, ready cut for use. Paper towel handy.
  6. Appropriate ink for colour position to be filled. NOTE: Drill the hole just enough to go through the plastic. (About the thickness of a house key or less) We strongly suggest you place a clean needle in each colour hole you made and confirm that’s the colour before inserting ink, just in case Canon have changed something. The needle should stain a tissue.

Refilling Statement

The method for refilling cartridges that is outlined in this instruction sheet has been tested and found to work without issue on Canon 37, 38, 40, 41, 50, 51, 52 printer cartridges. While we have had no problems refilling these cartridges, note that the ink level monitor in the printer will need to be disabled in order to continue printing on some models with refilled cartridge. Each cartridges ink counter will need to be disabled as it is reported empty, and the message will not re-appear for every refill there after. ( Note: After refilling a relatives MP190, it just asked 'You have either placed the same cartridge in, or a new one' after hitting OK, it just asked to print a test page, i said no and it worked a treat, no need to turn of the ink indicator on this model ) It is the user’s responsibility to monitor the actual ink levels and refill the cartridge when necessary. This can be done by stopping the printer when it actually runs out of ink (no ink is printed on the paper), or refilling before every large print job to ensure no interruption during the job. Running this type of cartridge without ink may/will damage the cartridge head requiring the user to purchase a new cartridge for refilling, so keep an eye on them.

The Troubleshooting section of your Canon manual discusses printer operation with refilled cartridges. “Canon will not be liable for any printer malfunction or damage caused by refilled ink tanks, and nor shall us at Sydney Metro If you want to continue printing with the refilled ink tank installed, press and hold the RESUME/CANCEL button for at least 5 seconds, and then release it. (Most Models) Refilled ink tanks are memorised. *This operation should release the function of detecting the remaining ink level. Or go to your printer 'properties' and 'maintenance' settings and you should be able to turn the ink indicator off.

*Our iP1600 has been refilled 6 times with no problems arising.
*
Installing a new cartridge will reactivate the ink counter. Note: These cartridge types with the head system built in, just like; HP, Lexmark don't last forever. Eventually, you will have to buy a new cartridge...

Vent Hole
Refill Instructions Canon 37, 38, 40, 41, 50, 51, 52 Inkjet Cartridges.

  1. Remove the label from the top or feel for the air hole around the centre somewhere and you can drill through the label if it won't come off... You can use tape to fix it later...

  2. Using a 2mm drill tool, open all of the vent holes that were previously covered by the cartridge label. Tape over all holes except the one you are going to place ink in. Use sticky tape or some electrical tape. This will stop spillage / contamination from hole to hole.

  3. Sit the cartridge on some newspaper or paper towel to take up any drops from the head.

  4. Attach a needle to the syringe and load with 6ml of ink for black and per colour, per syringe. 15-20ml for the black 37, 40 and 50. (These use pigment black, not photo black)

  5. Insert the needle into the correct cartridge colour ink hole you made. Make sure the needle reaches to almost the bottom of cart. Point it away from print head. Inject very slowly.

  6. Stop if the ink begins to come out from the fill hole you made. This means it’s full. Pull back a bit to release pressure and the chance of over-flow. (Refill Slowly)

  7. Clean off top of cartridge, un-tape the next fill hole and tape over the one just filled. This is so you do not get accidental colour contamination.

  8. Repeat steps until all the colours and or black(s) have been injected.

  9. Clean off the top of the cartridge. Place tape over the top of the cartridge so it covers every hole you made. Or, if the label is intact, replace it if it still seems ok.

  10. Use a pin and put a small hole (vent hole) through the tape for each hole on the top of the cartridge. This is important, don’t skip this step. The cartridge must be vented to allow air to pass or it won't work. Take care not to block the vein looking lines and small intends. Put a pin prick in the tape if the label won't fit back on after removal.

  11. Reinstall the cartridge in to the printer after letting it sit for a few minutes to check for leaks, then place back in and run one or two cleaning cycles if needed until the cartridge begins to print correctly. Refill before empty for better reliability and cartridge life.

  12. Trouble Shooting: If you get lines or no print at all, it could be that the holes are blocked that you made and the cartridge can't breath or the head has died. Simply put a small pin prick in the tape placed over the hole you made. Do a head clean. If this does not resolve the issue the cartridge may of expired. You may get 1 refill, 5 or 10 or more with this type, just like HP, Compaq and others it can be the luck of the draw, usage and condition.
